Lexi Petronis: Shopping

Lexi is an Albuquerque, New Mexico native who loves shopping. She developed her passion as a teenager and has fine-tuned her shopping skills as an adult in New Mexico. After graduating from high school here in the Duke City, Lexi went to journalism school in New York, where she worked as a copywriter for J. Crew and wrote for magazines such as Glamour, Cosmo Girl, and Fitness and Self. After moving back home to Albuquerque, Lexi worked for Albuquerque The Magazine, the city’s monthly lifestyle publication, as editor-in-chief for five years. Part of her job at the magazine involved keeping tabs on the city’s best locally-owned and independent stores. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of the on-sale artifacts and New Mexico gifts that will help you forever remember your trip to Albuquerque. Currently, Lexi is writing regularly for CoolMomPicks.com, Glamour and Glamour.com.

Questions & Answers

Q: I'll be in town for the New Mexico bowl this weekend (Go Temple!) and would like to explore some SW-style jewelry for my wife. I would like to find something unique. Suggestions? Thanks
A: Some great options are Skip Maisel's and Palms Trading Co, Inc. which are both located in Downtown Albuquerque. For an authentic experience along with your shopping, browse one of the many shops located in Historic Old Town near the plaza. Your wife is sure to love whatever you pick out for her. I hope you enjoy your visit to Albuquerque, and good luck in the Bowl game!
Q: Will the stores in Old Town be open on July 4?
A: Many of them will be open during the day, but will have shortened hours (closing from 2-4pm). I suggest getting in an authentic Old Town Albuquerque shopping experience during the day while the shops are still open, then enjoying the Freedom Fourth Celebration in the evening with food, live entertainment and a professional fireworks show!
Q: We just returned from the Balloon Fiesta and brought back some souvenirs for our friends. One particular item was a big hit (red peppers strung together in a cluster) and I would like to know where I can find more to purchase online. Thank you!
A: The red peppers strung together are called ristras--very popular fall decorations in the area! The Chile Casa in Old Town Albuquerque has an online store that will ship to you. Enjoy your ristras!
Q: I am going to be in Albuquerque for about a day and a half in early November, and plan to do some shopping while there. What would you recommend as the must go to places/areas to do so? Thanks
A: Great! There's lots of fun stuff to check out in a day and a half in ABQ. Here are a few leads for you:

Nob Hill: you could spend an entire day shopping in this area alone! Places such as Mariposa offer art, jewelry, and gifts made by local artists; you can find unique home items at Gertrude Zachary; stop for coffee and treats at Flying Star Cafe; hit clothing stores like Toad Road; have a tasty meal at delicious eateries such as Scalo, Brasserie La Provence, and Zinc.

Downtown: try JC's New York Pizza Department for great pizza; Sushi King for a tasty New Mexico roll (green chile tempura inside!); Sumner and Dene for local art and fun gifts; Skip Maisel's for Native American jewelry.
Q: We are looking for Southwestern candlesticks, napkins, pillows etc to finish our desert home. We will have about six hours in ABQ...any suggestions?
A: I suggest trying La Parada. Great store!
