Highlights University of New Mexico, est. 1889

In 1889, barely a decade after the arrival of the railroad, the University of New Mexico was founded just over a mile east of the tracks, pushing the city’s expansion further east. Today UNM is New Mexico’s largest university, occupying over 600 acres along the old Route 66 (now Central Avenue) and serving more than 25,000 students. The lively area surrounding UNM is full of colorful cafes, eclectic shops, trendy taverns and plenty of affordable lodging options.

The University is one of the city’s major cultural centers, hosting a symphony orchestra, theater and dance performances, art exhibits, lectures and sporting events. UNM is also home to the world-renowned Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, which specializes in artifacts and collections of the Southwest, and the University Art Museum, which houses the largest fine art collections in the state.
