Skiing & Snowboarding

Downhill snow skiing in New Mexico by Jay Blackwood - Sandia Peak Snow Ski AreaJust a half-hour drive, or a quick "flight" up the Sandia Peak Tramway gets you to Sandia Peak Ski Area, on the east side of the Sandia mountain range (called the "East Mountains" by locals). The east side of the Sandias offers an astounding contrast from Albuquerque, with thick pine forests instead of sagebrush, and a distinctly wintry climate in the late and early months of the year ideal for great snow skiing in New Mexico.

Snow Skiing in New Mexico

February offers the highest snowfall potential, but it's not unusual for the Sandia Peak Ski Area to open as early as November.  Sandia Peak welcomes snowboarders and boasts long, wide mountain runs for beginner and intermediate skiers. If you'd rather hit the trails than the slopes during a fun ski vacation, New Mexico offers plenty of opportunities for cross country skiing all around Albuquerque, including the East Mountain area, the Jemez Mountains to the north, or Mount Taylor to the west, all within an hour and a half drive from the city center.
