Biking, Hiking & Outdoors

New Mexico hiking in the Bosque Valley in year-round sunshine by ACVBAlbuquerque's location in a high desert rift valley lends itself to tremendous outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, biking, rock climbing, mountaineering, bouldering, geocaching and more. With the Sandia Mountains right in our backyard and an outstanding year-round climate, it's no wonder that Albuquerque is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of New Mexico wildlife.

New Mexico hiking

Whether you take a leisurely stroll or a strenuous uphill trek, hiking is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience the wonders of New Mexico's astounding scenery. On our New Mexico hiking trails you'll find breathtaking views and fascinating geological formations. You may also discover fossils, petroglyphs, petrified wood or ancient ruins. With abundant New Mexico wildlife in the area, chances are that you'll see roadrunners, deer, hawks or other woodland critters. There is no shortage of interesting hikes you can take in the Albuquerque metro area or by taking a quick trip into the nearby mountains and forests.

Albuquerque Bike Trails

Cycling on albuquerque bike trails
Challenging elevation changes plus dramatic scenic vistas with flats and hills make Albuquerque bike trails a haven for amateur and professional cyclists. Mountain bikers need to look no further than the Sandia foothills in northeastern Albuquerque, which offer miles of gravel and single-track trails leading to National Forest and Wilderness land overlooking the city. Albuquerque also has a vast network of paved bike trails throughout the city, including the gem of the network, the Bosque Trail. Traversing the city for approximately 15 miles along the Rio Grande, the Bosque Trail, a popular Albuquerque bike trail, winds through mature cottonwoods, wetlands and ample open space, where roadrunners, lizards and coyotes can often be spotted. Bike lanes on many of the city's streets and miles of open road on the outskirts are more reasons that Albuquerque bike trails have earned a solid reputation as an excellent destination for cyclists.

NM HWY 4 (18 miles west of Los Alamos). Year-round outdoor recreation in the heart of the Jemez Mountains.

The Valles Caldera National Preserve was a private ranch until 2000, when Congress created it from a well-known ranch known as “the Baca Ranch” in New Mexico’s volcanic Jemez Mountain Range. This 89,000 acre property is situated inside a collapsed crater. Studded with eruptive domes and featuring Redondo Peak (11,254 feet), this old ranch property is now being developed to explore a new way of managing public lands.
