For the New Mexico Philharmonic, PULSE means a new approach to old music, and bringing classical music into the pulse of today’s modern electronic sounds.
On Sunday, February 12th the two forces collide and collaborate onstage at the historic KiMo Theatre in two performances designed to get the audiences’ pulses revved up. The performances feature innovative music that is geared for audiences of all ages and present classical music in the context of modern pop and electronics, which are familiar sounds for younger audiences. The inaugural concert in the new series features the work of French filmmaker François Pain, who in the 1970s became one of the pioneers of the video light in France. He has created a series of short Art Films that will display during the performance of music by the American composer Mark Mellits. Baltimore native Marc Mellits is one of the leading American composers of his generation and has performed throughout the world.
Guest guitarist is Kevin Gallagher and the orchestra will feature members of the New Mexico Philharmonic.

Friday, February 10, 2012

Now in their 86th season, the Harlem Globetrotters continue to entertain millions of parents, children, and general basketball admirers with a trademark blend of athletic precision and razzle-dazzle showmanship. For the team's 2012 world tour, a rotating roster of Globetrotter favorites take to the hardwood each game, so spectators might spot Special K Daley sharing a behind-the-back pass with newcomer Jacob “Hops” Tucker, the 2011 NCAA slam-dunk champion whose 50-inch vertical leap cruelly dashed his dreams of working in a ceiling-fan store. The Trotters might also present a study in contrasts with five-foot-two Too Tall Hall and seven-foot-eight Paul "Tiny" Sturgess, the world's tallest pro basketball player.

As the Globetrotters take on their archrivals, the Washington Generals, youngsters can learn about the benefits of teamwork while laughing along and witnessing the jovial jocks performing classic routines of unconventional passing and sudden transmutations of water into confetti. Having performed in 120 countries and all six penguin-overrun continents, the Globetrotters are one of the few teams inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as ambassadors of the sport.

The Southwest Irish Theater Festival

Friday, February 10, 2012 - Sunday, April 15, 2012

The Southwest Irish Theater Festival will present five plays written by
Irish playwrights and produced by Albuquerque Theater Guild member theatres between February
and April, 2012. Its aim is to highlight the importance and richness of
Irish Theater.

Unlike American theater, the Irish Theater Movement played a central
role in establishing both the national identity of Ireland as well as
aiding its political independence from Britain. At the same time there
runs through this theater an examination and celebration of the
important rural culture that supports much of the Irish tradition and
spirit. From John Millington Synge in the early 1900’s to Martin
McDonagh in the 21st century, the Irish rural culture has been the
source of a brilliant examination of the human condition.

Friday, February 10, 2012 - Sunday, May 20, 2012

Hiroshi Sugimoto is the first one-person exhibition in New Mexico of this internationally acclaimed master of photography. Organized by museum director, E. Luanne McKinnon, the show provides a focused overview of five of Mr. Sugimoto’s (b. 1948, Tokyo, Japan) best-known projects which emphasize the characteristics of time, light, space, movement + form – the very nature of reality itself.

Selected works will be on view in the Van Deren Coke Gallery including the “Dioramas,” photographed in exquisite life-like detail at natural history and other museums; “Seascapes”, timeless vistas of air and water photographed at oceans from around the world; “Theatres,” for which he set the exposure time of his camera to the entire length of the film that was being shown; “Lightning Fields,” produced in the studio from experiments with electricity; and, “Mechanical Forms,” exquisitely detailed 19th century tools, the choice of which was highly influenced by the artist’s interest in Marcel Duchamp’s The Large Glass (1915-1923). The exhibition has been organized with the generous cooperation of the Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco and courtesy of the artist.

Concert: Eric Bibb and Guy Davis

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

Grammy nominee Eric Bibb is a native New Yorker with deep roots in the American blues and folk tradition. The son of 1960s folk and musical theater singer and television personality Leon Bibb, Eric's uncle was the jazz pianist and composer John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet, and Paul Robeson was his godfather. He has toured the world, performing at major festivals like London Blues Festival and Cambridge Folk Festival in Britain, Cognac Blues Festival in France, Byron Bay & Port Fairy in Australia, Vancouver, Edmonton & Calgary Folk Festivals in Canada, Montreal Jazz Festival, Chicago World Music Festival and San Francisco Jazz.

Handy Award winner Guy Davis has combined a theatrical legacy, as the son of stage legends Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, with a deep sense of the blues as the central trunk of African-American culture. He has portrayed Robert Johnson Off-Broadway, and also appeared on Broadway in Mule Bone (music by Taj Mahal) and in the highly acclaimed revival of Finian's Rainbow, and recently as a Special Guest in Million Dollar Quartet. At the same time, as Playboy magazine noted, "Davis reminds you that the blues started as dance music. This is blues made for humming along, stomping your foot, feeling righteous in the face of oppression and expressing gratitude to your baby for greasing your skillet." He has appeared at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and a host of international festivals. His latest album, Legacy, was picked as one of the Best CDs of the Year by National Public Radio (NPR).

Luxembourg By Hot Air Balloon" features 32 magnificent Luxembourg landscapes photographed from the basket of a hot air balloon. Luxembourg photographer and noted author Rob Kieffer and his balloon team floated over the most fascinating scenery and settings of the Grand Duchy: The Osling region of the Ardennes, the Gutland and Luxembourg City in the center of the country, the Minette area in the south and the Moselle valley in the east. The result of Kieffer's photographic journey was "Luxembourg By Hot Air Balloon, published by Editions Guy Binsfeld. The exhibition draws from the book and is owned by Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It has been exhibited in New York, Prague, Bangkok, Brussels, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Bratislava and Vienna.
Foul Play Café Presents: Family Can Be Murder

Friday, December 02, 2011 - Saturday, March 31, 2012

Join us at Foul Play Cafe for an evening of dining and comedic murder mystery where you must decide whodunit! The evening consists of a four course meal, served with a live performance occurring in and around your table. Watch carefully as clues fly fast and funny to determine who did it and why, and at the end of the evening you could have a chance to win a special prize.

Family reunions can be murder. In the case of the Hubbard family, that might be a very literal statement. When Alex & Toby Hubbard show up to spend the Holidays with their father, Joseph, they find that his new young wife may be maneuvering to make herself the sole heir to their father's fortune. Will Joseph's sister Charlotte be able to keep the family from killing each other? Or will she be the first to snap? Could all this infighting lead to the murder of one of these family members? Of course, it could! This is Foul Play Cafe & we wouldn't have it any other way!

Exhibition: Albuquerque: Along the Rio Grande

Sunday, November 20, 2011 - Sunday, September 01, 2013

For more than one hundred and twenty centuries, humans have lived in the region now known as the central Rio Grande Valley. When Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado’s army camped in the area in 1540-1542, they encountered an indigenous Tiwa-speaking native culture well adapted to a high desert environment and battling to retain its autonomy and cultural beliefs. For the next four centuries and especially after the founding of La Villa de Alburquerque in 1706, Spain, Mexico and ultimately the United States governed a population focused on survival, weathering harsh weather extremes, and building a unique economy based on agriculture, ranching, weaving, and merchant trade. Change came quickly after the railroad arrived in 1880 and especially after World War II, leading to huge population growth and making Albuquerque the creative and diverse city it is today.

Curator of history Deb Slaney notes, "This exhibition is just the right size and scope to carry us through to completion of our new core history exhibit, due to open in the Fall of 2013. Heavily drawn from 'Four Centuries: A History of Albuquerque,' it includes many of our most beloved and iconic artifacts. This exhibit is important because it allows us to continue to provide a context for students, families and out-of-town guests for learning about Albuquerque history while we are under construction during the next year and a half."

Exhibit: A Room of Her Own-My Mothers Altar

Saturday, October 15, 2011 - Friday, March 30, 2012

Sandra Cisneros, acclaimed author of The House on Mango Street and Caramelo, has created an art installation in the tradition of Día de Muertos ofrendas in the NHCC Art Museum. The work, titled "A Room of Her Own: My Mother's Altar," honors Cisneros' mother, Elvira Cordero Cisneros.

Cisneros was assisted by Texas artist Irma Carolina Rubio. Commenting on this work, a version of which they installed two years ago at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Cisneros writes: "My Mother never had a room of her own until the last 10 years of her life. She relished her room and often locked the door when the grandkids came so they wouldn't touch and destroy her things. She was a gardener, and loved her flowers. So I have tried to incorporate a garden bedroom in my installation with items from my mother's room and books from her bedside. She had a knack for finding antiques, and putting odd things together."

Wednesday, June 01, 2011 - Friday, August 31, 2012

Figures in clay from the Van Deren and Joan Coke Collection. These ceramic artists infuse the simplest of materials––mud––with creative force. They call forth forms of animals from the natural world as well as recreating creatures from the dream world such as materials (sirenas) and guardian spirits (naguales). Their subjects are drawn from politics, popular culture, religion, family and community and their approaches are often humorous or irreverent. The exhibition, will offer a glimpse into the diversity of figural clay works created in Mexico and celebrate both the identified and unidentified ceramic artists who create timeless beauty out of nothing but earth, air, fire and water.

"New Mexicans and the world know our state is a prime contributor to the contemporary sport of hot air ballooning," said Marilee Nason, Curator of Collections at the Balloon Museum. "In this exhibition, we also explore many other interesting and important roles lighter-than-air craft have played in the State of New Mexico -- in tourism, top secret projects, stratospheric research, aerospace medicine, and popular culture."

Some artifacts included in the exhibit are instruments from the Cold War reconnaissance project Moby Dick in which balloons were used to take high altitude photographs over Soviet sites. There will also be an original photo of the Graf Zeppelin flying over Columbus, New Mexico while completing its first round-the-world flight. The role of balloons in remote sensing and astronomical research in New Mexico will also be part of the exhibit.
