Whereas many of his Spanish-language contemporaries undertook English-language crossover campaigns at one point or another in their careers, Colombian singer/songwriter/guitarist Juanes won global appeal in his native language exclusively and became perhaps the biggest and most important popular Latin music artist in the world in the early 21st century.

Melanie Daniels is the modern rich socialite, part of the jet-set who always gets what she wants. When lawyer Mitch Brenner sees her in a pet shop, he plays something of a practical joke on her, and she decides to return the favor. She drives about an hour north of San Francisco to Bodega Bay, where Mitch spends the weekends with his mother Lydia and younger sister Cathy. Soon after her arrival, however, the birds in the area begin to act strangely. A seagull attacks Melanie as she is crossing the bay in a small boat, and then, Lydia finds her neighbor dead, obviously the victim of a bird attack. Soon, birds in the hundreds and thousands are attacking anyone they find out of doors. There is no explanation as to why this might be happening, and as the birds continue their vicious attacks, survival becomes the priority. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

Joy Kills Sorrow combines the virtuoso musicianship of traditional bluegrass with songwriting that touches on contemporary life and love with humor, intelligence and wit. The bold, young, Boston-based string band keeps a foot firmly planted in bluegrass roots—the band's name is a play on the call letters of the Indiana radio station that broadcast the Monroe Brothers in the 1930s—while the quintet's influences from the worlds of jazz, pop, swing and rock are clearly felt in its polished arrangements.

Based on Mel Brooks’ classic film, this big Broadway musical sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. It is a truly “boffo” hit, winning a record 12 Tony Awards and wowing capacity crowds night after night. The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history, thereby bilking their backers out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they maneuver their way through finding a show, hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds is a lesson in broad comic construction. THE PRODUCERS takes no prisoners as it proudly proclaims itself an “equal opportunity offender!”

Sunday, May 19, 2013 - Sunday, September 01, 2013

Changing Perceptions examines the revived interest in landscape by contemporary artists, demonstrating the power of the land to speak to the imagination. Recent works in painting, photography, printmaking, and even sculpture trace the evolving image of the landscape in art of the last 40 years. Many contemporary landscape artists explore the way that humanity has laid its hands on the land. Fences, dams, highways, and billboards appear as an acknowledgement that pristine wilderness is a rarity, foreign to most peoples' experience. Among the diverse artists showcased are Sandow Birk, Gus Foster, Woody Gwyn, Nancy Host, Merrill Mahaffey, Erica Osborne, Ed Ruscha, Mary Tsiongas, James Turrell, and Vincent Caldez. Their passionate visions of the landscape take viewers on vividly detailed journeys around the American West and into the challenging imaginations of modern day explorers.

During an ostentatious wedding reception at a Knoxville, Tennessee, estate, five reluctant, identically clad bridesmaids hide out in an upstairs bedroom, each with her own reason to avoid the proceedings below. They are Frances, a painfully sweet but sheltered fundamentalist; Mindy, the cheerful, wise-cracking lesbian sister of the groom; Georgeanne, whose heartbreak over her own failed marriage triggers outrageous behavior; Meredith, the bride's younger sister whose precocious rebelliousness masks a dark secret; and Trisha, a jaded beauty whose die-hard cynicism about men is called into question when she meets Tripp, a charming bad-boy usher to whom there is more than meets the eye. As the afternoon wears on, these five very different women joyously discover a common bond in this wickedly funny, irreverent and touching celebration of the women's spirit.

Exhibition: Curanderismo-Healing & Ritual

Saturday, May 04, 2013 - Tuesday, October 01, 2013

A new exhibition at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology will explore the historical and contemporary practice of Mexican folk healing. Curanderismo: Healing and Ritual is the first exhibition in the United States to focus on the traditional healing practice begun in rural Mexico and spread to the Southwest United States and beyond. While the healing techniques have been common among Mexican American population, Curanderismo is currently gaining popularity as people interested in natural alternatives to allopathic medicine seek traditional healers.
Curanderismo is rooted in cultural knowledge from across the globe, since the time of contact of the Old World with the New. It includes Moorish and Arabic elements; Judeo Christian concepts, and herbal traditions of the Maya and Aztec. Treatments and therapies were popularized by turn of the century Curanderos Nino Fidencio, Teresita, and Don Pedrito Jaramillo who have since become folk saints.
A multi-layered practice born of many cultural influences, Curanderismo has, in turn influenced contemporary localized practices of culture, politics and religion. This can be seen in the way that folk saints or political figures might be associated with Curanderismo and the way that contemporary Pop culture engages with the imagery and ideas of Curanderismo.
The exhibition includes a vivid array of contemporary and historical objects and images.

Saturday, March 09, 2013 - Saturday, June 01, 2013

Flatlanders & Surface Dwellers is a group exhibition featuring diverse visual art media that explore the intimate and exotic realm of surface texture that evokes visceral, multi-sensory responses. Throughout the history of art making, the artist’s relationship with surface has been a serious consideration. Renaissance artists, striving for illusion, expected the viewer to ignore the surface. Modernists embraced the surface and made it a primary consideration. Postmodernity does whatever it feels like with surface. Now, the digital revolution has allowed viewers to “interact with” the surfaces of gadgets; but still, an illusion is all that is ultimately permitted. This leaves the curious soul of the viewer with the desire to touch, connect, cut, penetrate, peel away and expose layers. As artists, we are aware that surface is ours to manipulate, whether it is a mask of superficiality, a final layer of honesty or a cloak of mystery. The book Flatland, written in 1884, is loosely referenced in the exhibition, as it provides a philosophical look at a two-dimensional world, exploring abstract concepts of shape, line and point, and highlighting “a world within the surface.” This exhibition is curated by guest curator Lea Anderson, and artists are selected by both invitation and a call for submissions.

Exhibition: Stitching Resistance-The History of Chilean Arpilleras

Friday, October 19, 2012 - Saturday, January 04, 2014

Arpilleras are a powerful art form- so much more than a "charming" or quaint applique. Layers of sackcloth or burlap fabric (arpillera) were joined, principally through applique, to create multi-dimensional (in layers and meaning) works of protest and resistance. Based on the collection of poet and Wellesley College professor Marjorie Agosín, the exhibition, Stitching Resistance: The History of Chilean Arpilleras is a result of an intense collaboration by poets, artists, scholars, and curators. It includes a total of 74 works by a variety of arpilleristas (makers of arpilleras) and workshops. The featured works span the period from the 1973 military coup and highlight human rights issues and violations, abductions and desaparecidos disappeared people), women and community, exile, and politics and authoritarianism The exhibit also extends to the present with examples showcasing a section titled "After the Darkness" as a post regime Chile returns and confronts its past. There are even a number of works recording the 2010 Chilean Mining Rescue. The intent of this powerful and extensive exhibit is to help illuminate the artistry and the history of arpilleristas and arpilleras in the hope that what happened to Chileans between 1973 and 1990 is never forgotten. And the artists who stitched it forever recognized.

NMSL&RHS (New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Rail Road Historical Society) is a non-profit organization staffed solely by dedicated volunteers whose mission is to fully restore the Baldwin 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive, known as AT&SF 2926, to operational status and then commence passenger excursion service. Our mission is to fully restore the Baldwin 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive, AT&SF 2926, to operational status and commence passenger excursion service. After years of effort by an eclectic and dedicated volunteer staff of Doctors, Scientists, Engineers, Skilled Tradesmen and others, the Tender is finished. The Locomotive itself is well past the tear down and inspection phase, and now well into the re-assembly phase. Despite recent events, the project steams forward. In the not-too-distant-future, we are confident the thunder of 2926 and the wail of her whistle will be heard again as she makes her way from town-to-town.
This is the unfolding story of 2926. Welcome aboard.

The A:shiwi Map Art Project is an art, language and place name project all in one. The project is intended to be a tool to help Zunis connect to places through artistic renderings of the Zuni cultural landscape. A group of Zuni advisors worked to first decide what not to map, then what would be culturally appropriate to include on the maps.Three Zuni artists were commissioned to each create paintings of the Zuni region, reservation and village respectively. The advisors worked through lists of potential place names, finally settling on those with which they wanted Zunis to be familiar. The paintings have been printed as full color posters with place names added.

Exhibition: Woven Stories-Navajo Weavers in a Changing World

Sunday, September 30, 2012 - Tuesday, December 31, 2013

Weaving is an intimate and sacred part of Navajo life and culture. It involves hard work: raising sheep and goats, carding wool, dyeing wool and making time for weaving. Over the past 200 years, Navajo weavers have faced many changes in lifestyle and environment. How do weavers adapt to these challenges, and what is the future of Navajo weaving? To address these questions, co-Curators Catherine Baudoin and Gwen Saul worked with several Navajo weavers to create the Woven Stories exhibition. Weavers’ impressions and observations profoundly affected the direction of this exhibit, and many of the stories and observations from the weavers are included.

Twenty-one Navajo textiles and over forty photographs taken by John Collier, Jr. offer opportunities to reminisce, to re-negotiate the past and to make connections to the present. Despite the challenges weavers currently face, they continue to build upon their own weaving traditions in innovative ways.

Exhibition: Albuquerque: Along the Rio Grande

Sunday, November 20, 2011 - Sunday, September 01, 2013

For more than one hundred and twenty centuries, humans have lived in the region now known as the central Rio Grande Valley. When Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado’s army camped in the area in 1540-1542, they encountered an indigenous Tiwa-speaking native culture well adapted to a high desert environment and battling to retain its autonomy and cultural beliefs. For the next four centuries and especially after the founding of La Villa de Alburquerque in 1706, Spain, Mexico and ultimately the United States governed a population focused on survival, weathering harsh weather extremes, and building a unique economy based on agriculture, ranching, weaving, and merchant trade. Change came quickly after the railroad arrived in 1880 and especially after World War II, leading to huge population growth and making Albuquerque the creative and diverse city it is today.

Curator of history Deb Slaney notes, "This exhibition is just the right size and scope to carry us through to completion of our new core history exhibit, due to open in the Fall of 2013. Heavily drawn from 'Four Centuries: A History of Albuquerque,' it includes many of our most beloved and iconic artifacts. This exhibit is important because it allows us to continue to provide a context for students, families and out-of-town guests for learning about Albuquerque history while we are under construction during the next year and a half."
